For the first time we release a tape that only consists of own work. Secondly, it’s created by Olene Kadar. Kadar’s origins lay in the cutting-edge minimal scene out of the early years from this new millennium. His early productions stood out from other releases and had been picked up by Dapayk’s Mo ferry’s label. From then on Kadar’s star was rising, especially in the Netherlands where he played all existing festivals and clubs. His major popularity had a little downside though: he sometimes started to alienate from his music. He always produced different kinds of music (ranging from beats, hiphop, breakbeat, and dubby minimal) but he couldn’t project that sound in his livesets. So we invited him to do as he like, and give us another piece of his musical mind. And he did. He made us a dubby minimal live-jam, that catches the vibe from 8 years ago and gives it a modern and dubby feel. Mind this: this set is served best when you listen it in one take; so get a book, a quiet room and play it on your headphones.

The 17th and 18th of may, we’re doing a litte Juxtamarathon in both Rotterdam and Arnhem. Friday we’re doing an intimate session in Rotterdam’s BAR with our good friends Eaglemen and Jameszoo. We’re very thrilled that we can play records together the whole night with this friendly and talented living music-libraries. This night we concentrate on worldmusic (afro, reggae, brasil) hiphop, and contemporary electronic bass-music-madness. Saturday we go back to our hometown Arnhem, debuting in Luxor Live (upstairs). Here we invited youngsters Dima and Det for some serious house, techno and bass music.

After a heavy Kingsday session, we continue the Juxtapes with a mix by Offhand. A member of Rotterdam’s Lowriders Collective, Offhand seems to be specialised in the 4/4 side of electronic music. Known for playing slick vogue, rough techno and heavy house, it’s a perfect blend of these genres which he presents in this Juxtape. Although Offhand provided us with a more than complete tracklist, as you may know, we don’t do tracklists. Okay, a couple of artists who appear in this mix: X-101, Parris Mitchell, J. Tijn, Steve Pointdexter, Mr. Lee and Equation. Have fun!

As you will know, we always have our radars up when it’s about new music. These radars, however, are also functioning quite good when it concerns older music. We love the historical catalogue that offers an endless wave of disco, Brasilian treasures, Afrobeat, and jazz. Tom van Haaren has the same keen eye on both old and new music. The juxtape from this music-fanatic and DJbroadcast journalist, somehow went a bit retro though. The newest track in his mix was released in 1990, while the oldest saw its birth in 1961. Enjoy this lovely selection of music bathing in sunshine, like we did this weekend.

By Down Under, we mean Eindhoven, and by ambassador of bass we mean Piro. Don’t get mistaken by the term ‘bass’ though; the music is just too weird to categorize. Anyhow, it does cover the interests of Piro. With a history in playing dubstep and jungle, he has a profound love for lower frequencies which now manifests in a cross-over sound which is predominately house- and techno-influenced. Livity Sound, Hessle Audio and Skull Disco are just a few labels that he seems to be closely related to. It is no surprise that he works at Octopus Agents, a Dutch agency that has 2562, Braiden, Delta Funktionen and Mike Dehnert amongst others on its roster.

Dit jaar is het thema “the dark universe”. Waarom? Dat quoten we even:

Starting points for the theme The Dark Universe are recent developments in science. These developments show that our world is more unfamiliar and weirder than we imagine. We know that in all likelihood only 4 per cent of the universe is made of ordinary matter, while the other 96 per cent remains completely dark to us. Think of the recent discovery of the ‘missing’ Higgs boson or the realisation that time and space do not correctly represent reality as we have come to understand it since Newton. The Dark Universe celebrates the deeply rooted human desire to occupy ourselves with mysteries. The arts and sciences have always been at the core of our exploration of the unknown, the strange, and the unfamiliar. Artists and scientists repeatedly rethink reality and question the things we think we know.

Al zijn we rete-enthousiast over acts van Takashi, Gerard ‘t Hooft, Andrew Blackwell en Joris Luyendijk; het muziek-programma steelt voor ons de show. Op zowel de vrijdag als de zaterdag zal Paradiso toneel zijn voor een keur aan toffe artiesten. Vrijdagavond, 22-2, hosten de mannen van Indigo en Tape de Paradiso met Ø (Phase) als briljante boeking. Wie de muziek van Ø niet kent, heeft een hele mooie bibliografie aan complexe tracks voor de boeg. Daarnaast is het ook zijn eerste NL-boeking ooit.

Op zaterdag 23-2 host Viral Radio onder de naam Sonic Dread de Paradiso met een nog voller programma. De nacht bevat zowel cutting edge electronica als dansvloermuziek. Zo zullen onder meer Dean Blunt (1/2 Hype Williams), Mika Vainio (1/2 van analoge minimal duo Pan Sonic) and Dead Fader optredens verzorgen waarbij je hersens bij mag gebuiken. Voor de dansers zullen juxta-favourite The Bug, juxta-vriend Coki, Kahn (die vorig jaar helaas niet op onze festival-stage kon komen draaien) en Sully genoeg ritmes en bass serveren. Alles onder curatele van Viral Radio’s Juha, H-Sik and Dariyan.
